THE SOUTHWESTERN TIMES
Welcome to ASU HUL494 Humanities Lab Group 7 Project
This “Newspaper” is part of a fictional project developed in 2023 imagining the world after a major catastrophic event, herein named “A-1 Asteroid Impact.”
All stories are created with the purpose, and through the lens, of every living person developing a disability, and incorporating futuristic interventions
to create a fully accessible, integrated, and inclusive society and world design.
Project Introduction
Welcome to the 2023 Humanities Lab, Cripping Technology, Group 7 Project. Our team was given the task of building a futuristic world where every individual has some form of disability following a fictional asteroid impact. The ideal future would have interventions that form a fully accessible world that is possible, plausible, and preferable.
Our project is laid out as a newspaper, accessible to the left, set in the year 2060 in the Southwestern United States, thirty-five years following the asteroid impact, which we have named A-1. The newspaper is ten pages long and can be viewed here, or downloaded.
The idea of this future is that there are some communities around the world that were not impacted to the degree that the Southwest was and therefore organizations of the Southwest are working to highlight and share the work that has been done so that it can be replicated all over the world.
Although the futuristic world has some amazing fictional characters to enhance the story, the disabilities that we discuss are real world issues from today and our proposed interventions are all based on art, design, and technology that is currently in the works through research and development.
The fictional newspaper begins with issue number 87 and sets the stage for the state of the Southwest, and the rest of the world, as of December 2060. The issue highlights advancements in community design, as well as technologically innovative devices, surrounded around accessibility through the values of integration, independence, and empathy.
Although this fictional world will have people with all types of disabilities, for this project the primary disabilities we focus on include chronic respiratory diseases, emotional and mental health disorders, and those who are blind, deaf, and/or are unable to speak due to any number of conditions. The primary interventions include biophilic designed communities, adaptive inclusive communication (AIC) devices, and carbon based bio-building materials.
